| Source name : http://www.proggnosis.com | Score : Not rated (12.30.2004) | Progressive Rock is a multi-faceted genre that seems to always be stretching far beyond it's accepted prerequisites. There will always be a place in the hearts of prog lovers for the definitive bands of the early seventies, and many bands have come and gone paying homage to these very bands. Along with that, the term progressive has become a somewhat all encompassing term that has adopted 'other' unusual, non mainstream music as it's own. Yet when considering Progressive Rock in it's most rudimentary essence, (if there is such a thing), certain music will always be yielding the very components that all fans of the music will agree make it the magical genre that it is.
Nemo is such a band, hailing from France, they are inarguably a progressive rock band, one listen to this cd -Prelude A La Ruine and you will be convinced. They are making music that is both adventurous, powerful, complex, memorable, talent rich, and best of all original. I have taken quite a bit of time in deciphering just what I am hearing on this cd prior to reviewing it, it's has that kind of depth that it required such attention. They are both modern and retro sounding, encompassing every positive aspect that comprises a great progressive rock recording. Musically they show their own personality throughout the cd, never sound derivative or contrived. Solid musicianship paired with creative composition makes this a treat for the aural senses. They employ vocals, which are being delivered in their native French language. At this point, that might seem to be a distraction to non-French speaking music fans, but please do not let that dissuade your interest in hearing this band, you would be missing out on one of the top releases of 2004.
I cannot really liken the sound of Nemo to any other bands out there. Just when one thinks that it's all been done before, they come along and prove that the future of progressive is just that.....progressing. I guess in some ways they have the same kind of impact from an originality perspective as their fellow French musicians - Taal. But that would only be a small part of their sound. I would clearly have to add other innovative bands to that, bands that defy the typecasts for the genre itself. Nemo can be heavy and powerful with driving guitars and grinding keyboards, and then become passionately moody, yet remaining highly sophisticated and cohesive at the same time. They excell as musicians, which to my ears is what makes this cd so special, the singing is very well blended, and the arrangements are fantastic, yet the band members' ability to play with both freedom and discipline make this so captivating. It's almost as if they are taking fusion musicianship, epical progressive rock compositions, the energetic instrumentations of Liquid Tension Experiment, mixing it all together for an entirely new musical experience.
All these words still do not seem to do this cd any justice, I can only hope that you go to the Nemo website (link available here on artists info page), and check out the bands sound, I am almost sure that the consensus amoungst progressive rock fans everywhere is that Nemo is the real thing.
